John, this was one of my favorites in the whole competition! I love the painterly aspect that you’ve been able to maintain. That is something I am struggling with. My submission looks totally digital. I am super proud of it, but still…
And I hear you about the deadline! I could have kept going, but seeing as I submitted it at 11:59, I already cut it too close. 
Thank you for such a huge compliment, to be honest most of my work has felt anything but painterly to me…
I hate noodling work because of my streak of perfectionism so sometimes I’ll spend way longer than I should just looking for imperfections, i’m getting better at letting go though.
Good luck in the competition, there are some pretty amazing pieces in there
